Amalgam to Composite

While there are no verified health reasons to remove all the amalgam fillings from your teeth, no matter what the internet says, replacement of failing silver fillings or doing a bonded filling for new decay, or just replacing old silver fillings because you’d prefer something tooth-colored, still has the distinct advantage of using a material that is truly bonded to tooth and thus preserves, or restores, some of the strength of the original tooth.

There are limitations to the size of filling subject to biting forces that should be considered when selecting whether to use a bonded composite, particularly in molar teeth, but used appropriately this is a great and conservative option. Patients like the nearly invisible nature of the filling in their tooth, and dentists like the bonded strength that this process entails.
